Here are some definitions of common terms and names we use:

A

Autonomy (also autonomous):

The quality or state of being self-governing; self-directing in freedom.  Congregational
churches are not governed by any human institution or being, relying on God alone.

Congregationalism:

Congregationalism is a way of living toward God that is based on faith in God through
Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit; freedom to learn about God and how God would have
us live as persons and as the Body of Christ; and fellowship as we respond to God's
love by loving one another.

N

National Association of Congregational Christian Churches:

A sisterhood of churches that believe that Jesus Christ is Lord, and that the
local church is the final authority, in prayer and reflection in the Holy Spirit,
for our lives together as a congregation.

Non-hierarchical:

Each church is autonomous (although not independent, relying on sister
churches for mutual support and guidance), without governance by a
bishop, synod, diocese, or other directive body.
